Did you know that 16 million children in America struggle with hunger? According to No Kid Hungry, children who are undernourished often exhibit academic, behavioral, and emotional problems and are susceptible to illness and obesity.
At Pressley Ridge, we see firsthand the struggle that hunger presents for families and we’re always looking for new ways to create success for our children and families. We think we’re on to something with one of our latest programs — Backpack Giveback, introduced by Board Member Michael McMullen and his wife Julie.
“Michael and I are honored to be involved with the Backpack Giveback program. It truly breaks our hearts that families in our community are having a hard time putting food on the table. We want to do everything we can to help these families. By adding a few extra cans of soup, boxes of pasta, or jars of sauce at the grocery store anyone can help,” says Julie McMullen.
Since July 2013, Pressley Ridge and the McMullens have been filling backpacks with healthy, non-perishable foods to support our children and families. Along with Andora Restaurant, Schroeder Industries has joined the effort by hosting a food drive. Not only were they able to help families in the Pittsburgh area, but also families in Cumberland, Maryland. Locally, we’re giving hope to needy families on a regular basis. Just last week, more than nine families were helped. That’s over 44 people fed a total of 352 meals from 1,760 ounces of food!
Imagine what impact we can make working together. With your help, we can expand Backpack Giveback to all of our programs in the six different states. We invite you to be a part of the effort to provide food security to those who need it most. Let our children and families know that “you have their backs” by hosting a food drive or making a donation today!
