Aggression transformed into a relationship saved

Jerry began receiving community-based services in the Lorrain County program at the age of 14. At the time of referral his primary issues included conduct problems in the form of aggression with peers, and defiant oppositional behaviors toward adults. He also had a history of numerous hospitalizations and a psychiatric diagnosis. While he did attend school regularly, he was having academic difficulties, was disruptive in the classroom and got into fights with his peers. Jerry and his family received services for two years.

Jerry is now 17 and he and his mother live with Jerry’s grandparents. Both Jerry and his mother report that everything at home has been going well. Jerry attends regular high school classes during the morning, and has a half day of vocational training. He participates in extracurricular activities and is trying to get on the basketball team this year. Jerry has been successful at refraining from physical aggression. He said that, “I sometimes want to, but I’ve been holding myself back.” Jerry’s mother continues attending a support group for parents with kids who have psychiatric issues, and feels that she has become a better advocate for her son.

Both Jerry and his mother say that working with Pressley Ridge staff was a very positive experience in their lives. “The Intercare staff helped my son get through a very difficult time in his life,” said Jerry’s mom. “They were always positive with us, and they taught me a lot about my son’s mental health issues. Things aren’t perfect, Jerry still has his ups and downs, but I have a much better relationship with my son.”
